Nova AI Research Assistant

Nova is your AI Research Assistant that empowers you to chat with your own survey data, making it easy to explore insights and trends in real time. Beyond retrieving, summarizing, and visualizing responses, Nova allows you to apply custom data scopes—such as filtering answers by a specific question or using a custom filter—giving you full control over how you analyze and interpret your data.

Summarization

Nova’s summarization feature is frequently used to extract key themes, list common issues, or create summary reports. By default, the summarization scope is limited to 50 items, but you can adjust it to All items if needed. If your data scope is too large, Nova will notify you that summarization may take longer and ask for your confirmation before proceeding. Upon confirmation, Nova uses a recursive collapsing algorithm to generate the summary.

Data Retrieval

Data retrieval is another key capability of Nova. It’s particularly helpful when you need a few examples from your dataset or have a very specific request—such as “Show me 5 quotes from people who weren’t satisfied with the UI experience.” The maximum data scope for retrieval is 50 items, and this limit is currently not customizable.

Data Visualization

Nova can generate diagrams and charts if there’s enough numerical data within the chat thread. After creating a chart, you can export it as a PNG by hovering over the chart and clicking the download button in the top-right corner.

Data Scopes

By default, Nova’s data scope is set to all survey submissions, using the entire response transcription.

Question Filters

You can filter by a specific open-ended question, allowing Nova to focus solely on the answers to that question. This is especially useful when you need a detailed report on a particular question’s responses.

Custom Filters

You also have the option to create custom filters to refine your dataset further. To do this:

  1. Open the Data Scope dropdown.
  2. Click Create Custom Filter to launch the Filter Builder.
  3. In the Filter Builder, you’ll find three sections:
    • Must (AND)
    • Must Not (NOT)
    • Should (OR)

By combining these conditions, you can create more complex queries and have granular control over which responses are included or excluded.

Data Scope Sizing

By default, the data scope size is set to 50. While you can adjust this setting, we recommend keeping it at 50 for large datasets to avoid lengthy summarization times and excessive token usage.
